The sad spectacle provided today by Trump and JD Vance is a humiliation of American and Western liberal democracy. The duo debased themselves in every attack they lobbed at Zelensky, an actual leader who has stuck with his country through the challenge that has been the war that Russia started.
President
Zelensky stayed in Kyiv even at a time where there was no certainty about what
was going to happen in Ukraine. At a time where most of us expected Russia to
attain their goals swiftly and where it appeared they would make it to Kyiv in
no time.
There were
even livestreams set up by reputable news agencies like AP or Reuters set on
the central square where the Euromaidan protests had occurred.
Notwithstanding
that expectation, when offered the opportunity to run from Ukraine Zelensky said
“I don’t need a ride, I need bullets” and defied Moscow’s imperialist
ambitions.
Would Trump
do that? We all know the answer is no. The man who evaded draft during the
Vietnam war citing bone spurs but couldn’t remember which feet it had been on,
couldn’t be counted on for that.
Would Vance
do that? We also know the answer for that. The weasel that traded every
criticism he ever made of Trump for elected office can’t be trusted to have a
single genuine political position other than “I’ll do whatever Peter Thiel
wants”.
This is the
sad pathetic duo representing what is (or used to be) the world’s largest and
most powerful democracy.
On top of
their lamentable display of disrespect and disregard for Ukraine’s plight, one
other thing stands out: their level of subservience to Russia’s agenda.
We might
never know with certainty why, but it is clear that Trump and his
administration defer to Moscow’s interests. Be it in supporting the European
far-right (as Vance’s ludicrous speech at the Munich Security Council showed)
or in their willingness to sidestep Ukraine in “peace talks” with Russia that
give Russia all they want with nothing other than a cessation of hostilities in
return – a cessation that without any security guarantees, which the US refuse
and Russia says they don’t want the Europeans providing, might prove temporary
and elusive.
Trump
thought he was going to get Zelensky to sell off Ukraine’s mineral wealth for
next to nothing today. That didn’t materialize and God willing it won’t.
Ukraine deserves a seat at the table and no decision about it should be made
without it.
Today’s sad
episode is historical because it sees the President and Vice-President of the
United States bending over backwards to push Moscow’s imperialist propaganda as
truth in an attempt to normalize selling out Ukraine.
America’s
great democratic experiment has seen highs and lows, but this has to count as
one of the lowest moments in its history.
